"The Return of [a] King"

"Mother, you are suspected for his death,/ And therefore we commit you to the Tower/ Till further trial may be made thereof" (Act 5.6.78-80)

After the terrible leadership of Edward II, Edward III is a breathe of fresh air (well maybe more like a vacation in the Caribbean). In his first act as King, he seems to be passive and yielding to his elders. But spurred by his father's death, he finally takes a stand and starts taking aggressive action. He shows restraint and wisdom by having his own mother put on trial for the murder of Edward II, yet he also presents his authority by beheading Mortimer (and maybe a little bit of savageness by placing his head on the casket). Regardless, anything is better than Edward II. Edward II and III severely contrast in ruling the kingdom. Hopefully, Edward won't have any little Gaveston's around to get busy with.
